Profit Is Not Cash: Why Owner-Led Businesses Need a Forward View
Profit explains trading performance, but cash-flow forecasting shows whether payroll, BAS, super, suppliers, loans and drawings can be funded on time.
The P&L does not show payment timing
A business can show profit and still feel short of cash. The usual reason is timing. Customer invoices may be unpaid, supplier bills may land earlier than expected, wages are fixed, super and BAS dates arrive, and loan repayments or owner drawings can move cash without showing as ordinary operating expenses.
This is why the bank balance alone is not enough. It shows what is there today, not what needs to be paid next week or next month.
A forecast gives the owner warning time
A useful forecast lists expected receipts, payroll dates, super timing, BAS timing, supplier payments, rent, loans, owner drawings and the expected closing cash position. It should be updated as actual results come in, not left as a once-a-year spreadsheet.
The forecast will never be perfect. Its value is warning time. If a shortfall is visible early, the owner can follow up debtors, delay non-essential spend, update supplier conversations or adjust plans before decisions become rushed.
Clear numbers support calmer decisions
SRWN helps owner-led businesses connect bookkeeping, monthly reporting and cash-flow forecasting so the owner can see what has happened and what is likely to happen next.
That does not guarantee a business outcome. It gives the owner a better operating view and a clearer basis for the next conversation.
